Hi Friends,
First of all I would like to say a warm welcome to all out there who are going to read my first article ....I will try to put in it all that I know about the "BPO Industry". Many of us who are just out of our school/ college wonder at times "if BPO is a stable & productive career option?"
A lot of parents are also sceptical with their kids having to work in night shifts with BPOs.. I have been in this industry from the past 6.5 years and have seen in & out of the complete BPO setup & the working style. All what I will be writing now is based on my personal experiences.
Whenever we try choosing a career, we want to measure the positives & negatives attached as we would do while choosing anything in our life. Also, as we step into the career making age (18+) & the entire life lies in front of us, we want to make the right decision while choosing our career. Read On.....
Let me try to list down positives & negatives I experienced with this industry to make the decision easier for those stuck & not being able to finalise whether to go with BPOs or not.
Positives:
1. Higher pay packages as compared to any other industry .Even a starter with basic graduation & good spoken English can get a package in range of 15-20k per month with some good BPOs.(No other industry offers this kind of package to a fresher. Even people at senior position play in Gold)
2. Pick/ Drop Facility . A lot of BPO even provide A.C cabs to their employees. (Saves your money)
3. Free Meals: Mostly all BPOs provide free meals to their employees. (Saves you money)
4. Lively Atmosphere: Average age group being 25-30 .This keeps things light & lively at work. (One feels at school/college ...even those who haven't experienced college life get a chance to witness a similar lively atmosphere)
5. Air Conditioned offices: No More sitting in fans in summer :-)
6. Multinational Standard Buildings: Seems a white collar job.
7. Lot of parties & Outings: A lot of parties & outings are organised for team building etc... Most of them are company sponsored ......You know what I mean :-)
8. Quick Growth in position & Pay Package: BPOs offer fast growth to deserving employees with an obvious hike in pay package.
9. Plenty of Options: By working in a large industry like BPO, you open doors to skipping jobs for better opportunities especially at the start of your career.
10. Build Confidence & communication Skills: Hindi being our mother tongue, most of us rarely do communicate in English. Though we might have passed out from good Private schools, still lot of us are hesitant in speaking English especially in Public. BPO industry is all about talking & talking & most times in English. The language doesn't matter that much as any language that you speak in within public builds your confidence as well. So BPO's would definitely help a lot of you in improving your communication skills & followed by the confidence that you carry while conversing... Read On to know the Negatives...
Negatives :
1. Night Shifts /Shift Rotation: Can be a problem for those who ain't in habit of staying up till late or can't cope up with shift rotation as many BPO's operate in 24x7 environment. May create heath problems in some cases.
2. Travelling time: A lot of BPO employee come from far off places hence have to travel long distances to reach to their work place.
3. Stiff Targets: Most BPOs have target based "carrot & stick approach”...they reward the ones who perform & it is obviously the opposite for non performers ...so challenge is always on your head....
4. Drinking/Smoking: It may hold true in some cases but not all is my personal belief...A lot of BPO employee fall prey to hazardous habits like drinking / smoking as they get a lot of freedom suddenly after their college / school & with easy bucks coming their pockets .....This can become a possibility. Read on....
Well these are the points I can think of & honestly if you will go through all of the above in depth & think over them the positive side is heavier for sure ....
The negatives attached to BPOs are similar in nature as those attached with other industries.....It only lies in the mind ..Some one who doesn't want would not smoke anywhere & vice versa. All the best in choosing your career option & I hope my post was beneficial to at least some extent to those who are looking at BPOs as an option .
Cheers
